Technopreneurship: First Meeting.

January 31, 2020 Friday was our first meeting. At first, I was nervous, the first day was only discussing course syllabus, how the grading system works, nothing much and the class ended. I was late because I left the house at 5:45 A.M and arrived really late. But that’s it. The first meeting was ok, I arrive early at Quimpo Boulevard, met my friend at Trading, ride Obrero PUJ, arrive early, at 6am (don’t know the exact time) and the engineering building was still closed, so I talk with my friend about the game we play, anime, manga’s and stuffs then in my head, i just asked him straight about some activities that might be come on the first day of our subject, since it was his second time taking the subject so I asked out of nowhere, then he laugh about it because it brings back memories for him, so he told me that the first activity might include of using yellow paper, black or blue pen, always listen in the instructions before doing anything, and so on, he talk while i was panicking inside my mind, “do i have yellow paper here? Is my pen here? What color?” but he told me, “don’t worry, you are allowed to go outside to buy but not allowed to give paper for free” and i was like “ohhhhhhh, no sh*t mate” and burst to laugh, then the UpdateGuru team arrived, the door was unlocked then we proceeded to enter inside. The room is located on the second floor, Lab2, good thing not on the fifth floor or i might lose breath before the class after taking the stairs. So with that, we just waited outside Lab2 before it opened, it didn’t take a while but it was opened by the teacher, we waited for our professor to come. A little wait then he arrived, told us to enter the room and wait for him.

While waiting inside the room, us 5 looked for the best seat to take, because they said that it’s better to sit in front since our prof. voice could not be heard at the back, might be hard for us to listen well so we chose near the aircon, and believe it or not, it was cold, for them and not me, while waiting, some of our classmates arrived, sat at the back, talked to their seatmates.

Prof. arrives with his laptop, ready to start the class, set up the Samsung smart TV, but noticed that some students are far away, so he asked if they could change seats since prof. voice might not be heard from there. 2 classmates sit in our row, that’s kinda reassuring, anyways, before the lecture starts, prof. gave us activity, a 9 dot, forming like a square. The task is to connect the dots using 4 lines without lifting the marker. Of course I already know the answer, but what keeps me from wanting to answer is my nervousness. So yeah, all i did was watch other students answering it, listening to their explanations as to why they got the answer. The explanation was simple, just simply extend the line outside. This explains why other prof. would tell you “think outside the box”, you don’t rely on what you heard in your class, it’s your job to learn more. At first i don’t really get it, why do i have to when it’s a lot of trouble, but prof. gave a small yet understandable explanation, and that draws me in to listen more to the lecture.

Prof. told us how technopreneurship was created and why it was important, I can’t really recall all what prof. said but there’s one thing he said, it was the word “improvement”, technopreneurship is all about improvement, improving on what is already created/made by other people, he then told us why is it so important, it was simple, “To improve Davao City”.  It blew my mind, but I suddenly got dragged to reality, if technopreneurship’s aim was to improve Davao City then why i don’t see many improvements. He then told us why, a mother’s point of view for it’s child is to send them to school, get good grades, land in high paying jobs. That’s the default mindset for parents as well as the students has, this mindset was to be the employee not the employer, it got me hard, I thought it was the only way for graduated students to live, land in a high paying job. Prof look at us, told us how many times this university won all the contest in technopreneurship, he told us that most of facilitators was under his subject back in the days, it was a long story, but after that he told us that it’s better to be the employer, that’s why the subject, technopreneurship, was created for this, prof. along with his friend studied technopreneurship abroad. After coming back, they  called all teachers in Davao and re-introduced technopreneurship and why it is important. The subject was added, it’s aim is to help students start their own business, not to be the employee but to be the employer. This was to help students start their own business. They created a book about Technopreneurship and introduced it to other universities. Prof explains why good students are always recruited by large companies, some average students are recruited by other companies, while a not-so good students are left in Davao. “Tayo and nagtanim, iba ang umani”, he simply wants us to graduate in university not being the employee but to be the employer. He simply wants Davao City to be known as world class producers of Technopreneurs.
